Demographics and Population Density[]

Hexes are 2 miles across, area of ~3.5 sq miles. Conveniently, each hex is also about a village worth of farmland (2000 acres). Rigby's numbers suggest that 640 people/sq mi is a reasonable support figure for TL4 with foot transport so we'll go with that as a minimum - some areas, like Uxbridge, are probably 10x as efficient.

56% of the map is water, so effective population density is 60K / 10K sqmi / 2, or ~12 people sqmi, or 40 people hex.

Ring count by size:

Population Radius Hexes
40 0 1
300 1 7
700 2 19
1500 3 37
2500 4 61
3700 5 91

So. 10K people in the Carolignias, 10K raiders, nomads, and such, 4K in Plymouth, leaves 36K population or ~50 villages. And I have 51 village markers on the map, so go me!

Plot Hooks by location[]

  • Diamond City: Scavenge in Boston?
  • Carolignia Kingdom: Institute a change in leadership
  • Uxbridge Farms: Join the programmers and/or become their spy force
  • Martha's Vineyard: Slave rescue / change in leadership

Settlements[]

All settlements need: Food source, water source, security, manufacturing. Every settlement should be deficient in at least one requirement, so as to encourage trade. There's an obvious tension between food and security: smaller borders make for easier security (ie, Diamond City, the Navy) but mean less area to grow food. Some settlements (ie, Uxbridge Farms) have both food and security, so they have to lack manufacturing or else they're a pre-War society in the post-Apocalyptic world and we can't have that.
